There are periods in life that leave a mark that’s not only deeply felt but very visible. They affect how our bodies feel and how we see ourselves. In moments like this, a true glow up isn’t about drastic change. It’s about restoring ourselves mentally, physically, and emotionally, allowing our natural glow to return.
And while time does its part in healing, we can also support that process, helping our bodies and minds recover with a bit more ease. This isn’t about an overnight transformation, though. And it takes more than just finding the right skincare routine.
I’ve always believed that real beauty starts from within. And in my experience, taking the time to go inward after stressful periods creates the most lasting results, especially when it’s supported by external care.
So here I’m sharing a mix of tools that have helped me rise from the ashes, reimagine myself, and come back glowing.
Release the Load
While you’re carrying the mental weight of stress, it becomes much harder to focus or stay consistent with any kind of self-care. Even simple things can feel like too much. That’s why it’s important to begin with your mind.
After going through a difficult period, your thoughts and emotions don’t just disappear. They need to be processed. And one of the simplest ways to do that is through writing.
Journaling doesn’t have to be structured or deep. It just needs to be honest. Think of the page as a safe space to release everything you’ve been holding in. You can write freely, without worrying about how it sounds or whether it makes sense. The goal isn’t to create something meaningful. It’s to let things out.
The more stress you’ve been under, the more important this release becomes. It can even help to keep a small notebook nearby and write things down whenever thoughts or emotions start to build up again. Instead of holding them in, you give them somewhere to go.
At this stage, it’s best not to overanalyze what you’re writing. Questions like “why did this happen?” or “what does this say about me?” can easily pull us into cycles of overthinking. Right now, you don’t need to figure everything out. You just need to express what’s there, as it comes, without trying to make sense of it.
What many people don’t realize is how much this mental load affects the way we look and feel physically. When your mind is overwhelmed, your body stays in a subtle state of stress. Your face can become tense, your expression more tired, and your eyes may lose some of their brightness.
But when you begin to release that inner pressure, even gradually, it shows. Your features soften, your expression becomes lighter. It’s a kind of glow that makeup can’t achieve. It comes from finally giving your mind the space to breathe.
Reconnect with Self
Once you begin releasing some of the mental load, the next step is reconnecting with your inner self. It will help you remember who you are and reimagine how you want to express yourself in the world. This is where meditation becomes incredibly powerful.
Meditation has a direct effect on the body’s chemistry. When you slow down and turn your attention inward, your system begins to shift out of stress mode. Cortisol levels gradually decrease, your nervous system settles, and your muscles start to relax. This alone already changes how you feel, but it also changes how you look.
When your body is no longer in a constant state of tension, it can finally focus on restoration. Digestion improves, nutrients are absorbed more efficiently, and your body can direct that nourishment where it’s needed. Over time, this creates a visible difference.
But the effects of meditation go beyond physical changes.
With regular practice, you may notice that your inner state becomes more stable. You feel less reactive, less affected by external stress, and more grounded in yourself. There’s a confidence that starts to build because you feel more in control of your inner world.
Your thoughts become clearer. Your decisions feel easier. And you develop a certain resilience to negativity that used to drain you.
This is why meditation plays such an important role in a glow up that lasts beyond removing your makeup. It doesn’t just help you relax, it helps you rebuild your relationship with yourself.
If you’re new to it, there’s no need to overcomplicate things. You can start with just a few minutes a day and explore what feels natural to you. Some simple approaches include:
- Breath-focused meditation, where you gently bring your attention back to your breathing
- Guided meditations, where you listen to a voice leading you through the process
- Body scan practices, where you slowly bring awareness to different parts of your body and release tension
- Visualization, where you imagine calm, safe, or uplifting scenarios
There’s no single “right” way to meditate. The best practice is the one you can return to consistently.
Get Back to Your Body
Negative emotions tend to get stored in the body. Tension, fatigue, heaviness, or even that subtle feeling of being “disconnected” from yourself are often signs that stress has settled into your system. That’s why movement can be such a powerful part of a glow-up process.
The key here, though, is how you move. After stress, your body doesn’t need more pressure. Intense workouts can actually raise cortisol levels even further, which is the opposite of what you want right now.
Soft practices that combine slow movement with breathwork are the most supportive during this phase.
- Yoga can stretch and soften areas where stress tends to build up
- Tai chi calms the nervous system while improving balance and coordination
- Walking has a predictable cadence, similar to rocking a baby, and a calming effect
- Flow dance lets your body express stored emotions, allowing both emotional and physical release
The most important thing is to listen to your body. Move in a way that feels supportive, not demanding. When you do that, the release happens naturally, without forcing it.
Alongside movement, massage can be incredibly restorative and beautifying.
There are different types of massage you can explore, depending on what you need:
- Swedish massage is one of the most gentle and relaxing options, ideal if you’re feeling tense and overwhelmed
- Aromatherapy massage combines touch with calming essential oils, creating a more sensory, soothing experience
- Lymphatic drainage massage uses light, rhythmic movements to support detoxification and reduce puffiness, which can also improve skin appearance
If going to a professional isn’t always possible, you can still create small massage rituals at home. Simple tools can make a big difference:
- A gua sha or facial roller to relieve tension and improve circulation in the face
- A scalp massager to relax your head and stimulate hair health
- A foam roller to release tight muscles in your body
- Even using your hands with a body oil or lotion, taking a few extra minutes to massage your shoulders, neck, or legs
These moments of touch may seem small, but they add up. They help your body soften, your mind slow down, and your overall presence feel more at ease.
Nourish Yourself from Within
Stress increases the demand for nutrients, and our bodies deplete their resources just to keep us going. This can show up in subtle ways: lower energy, dull skin, brittle hair, or a general feeling of being “run down.”
Giving your body all the right nutrients after stress helps it repair, so that your skin regains its glow, your hair becomes stronger, and your overall energy becomes stable. It’s a foundation for any long-lasting glow up.
Some nutrients are especially supportive during this phase.
Omega-3 fatty acids calm inflammation and support brain health. They can also help improve skin hydration and elasticity, giving your complexion a softer, healthier look. You can find them in foods like fatty fish (such as salmon and sardines), walnuts, flaxseeds, and chia seeds.
B vitamins are essential for your nervous system. They help your body cope with stress, support energy production, and contribute to healthy skin and hair. Foods like eggs, whole grains, leafy greens, and legumes are rich in these vitamins.
Vitamin C is another key player for skin repair and brightness. It supports collagen production, which helps your skin stay firm and radiant. Citrus fruits, berries, kiwi, and bell peppers are all great sources.
Magnesium is often depleted during times of stress, yet it’s crucial for relaxation. It helps calm the nervous system, improve sleep quality, and reduce muscle tension. You can replenish it through foods like dark leafy greens, nuts, seeds, and dark chocolate.
And then there’s your gut, which is more connected to your glow than it may seem.
Prebiotics help nourish the beneficial bacteria in your digestive system, improving digestion and nutrient absorption. When your gut is balanced, it often reflects in clearer skin and better overall well-being. Foods like garlic, onions, leeks, asparagus, and bananas are simple ways to include them in your diet.
You don’t need to overhaul everything at once. Look for small and easy additions to make.
Support Your Skin
Now that all the internal work is underway, let’s talk about things we can add to our skincare for that extra polished look. You may already know that prolonged stress weakens the skin barrier, slows down repair processes, and disrupts balance. So it’s helpful to focus on restoring and strengthening your skin. Think of your skincare routine during this time as gentle support, not correction.
Here are a few key ingredients that can make a noticeable difference:
Hyaluronic acid is one of the simplest ways to bring hydration back into the skin. It helps attract and hold moisture, making your skin look plumper, smoother, and more refreshed. This is especially helpful if your skin has been feeling dry or tired.
Ceramides are essential for repairing the skin barrier. When your barrier is compromised, your skin can become more sensitive and prone to irritation. Ceramides help rebuild that protective layer, allowing your skin to retain moisture and defend itself more effectively.
Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) is a very supportive, multi-tasking ingredient. It helps calm redness, improve skin texture, and regulate oil production. It’s gentle enough for most skin types and works well when your skin feels out of balance.
Vitamin C can help bring back brightness. After stress, the skin can look a bit dull or uneven, and this is where vitamin C supports a more radiant, even tone. It also works alongside your internal nutrition to support collagen production.
Aloe vera and panthenol (provitamin B5) are excellent for soothing and calming the skin. If your skin feels reactive or sensitive, these ingredients help reduce discomfort and support healing.
The key is not to overload your routine.
You don’t need ten new products. A few well-chosen ingredients, used consistently, are far more effective than constantly switching or overdoing it. Focus on hydration, barrier repair, and gentle nourishment.
Give it Time
A glow up after stress isn’t something you force. It happens when you:
- Clear your mind
- Support your body
- Nourish yourself
- And gently reconnect with what makes you feel good
You don’t need to rush this process. Give yourself time, softness, and consistency and your glow will return in a way that feels real and lasting.
